Salsa class…wtf?

Posted on January 17, 2012

I suppose this is the first update to my new years resolutions, last night I did something that was completely out of my comfort zone and is a step towards doing something for a work life balance. Last night I went to a... Salsa Class, admittedly it wasn't really my choice but as Mrs Powell to be fancied it and it was being held at my sailing club I didn't really have much choice. When we arrived it was good to see quite a few familiar faces, ...

Why Automated twitter feeds don’t work, or Heston Blumenthals empty promises

Posted on January 8, 2012

For some time I have been trying to come up with an automated solution so allow small businesses to make the most of twitter with a minimal of effort. While I have had some success I've never come up with something I would be happy to release into the wild on behalf of a client because you never really know what's going to happen. It looks like Heston Blumenthal is about to discover what happens when you use automated software to manage you ...

New Years Resolutions

Posted on December 31, 2011

It's that time of year where you find yourself reflecting on life and how you can improve it. Today I realised that as I work constantly,  drive an MG, listen to Radio 2 and enjoy Werther's Originals I have at some point  become my Dad. Something has to change! so here are my resolutions for 2012 in no particular order. I will be adding it to the sidebar of my blog as a reminder for myself and will try to keep you updated as to how I'm ...

I have been using Teamviewer  for years to support friends and family, I love the program, its simple, effective, and best off all for non comercial use its free! This year I put it in my business to allow staff to remotely interact with clients and it works well, I had no qualms in paying in excess of £900 for a "Lifetime license" that in all fairness offers us no benefit over the free version except for the warm fuzzy feeling you get ...

What’s in a name?

Posted on December 8, 2011

Being someone who has grown up with the internet I have always played around with having my own website. It has gone through several changes of domain up to the most recent Now there are a couple of things I don't like about this domain, it goes against the advice I give people about choosing a domain name that being go for the .com where available and avoid hypens. Some time ago I discovered that was available ...

Facebook timeline

Facebook's latest change time line is now available to developers if you want to get access early you can follow the instructions found here. While it looks impressive there isn't really a lot to tell as only developers can use it and we don't tent to interact with each other that much ;-) So far it seems to be purely a cosmetic makeover with no new features but only time will tell.

Get more space on Dropbox for Free

Posted on October 23, 2011

I'm a big fan of dropbox the free online file sharing service, I use it to keep my documents in sync across multiple computers and access them while out and about with my Ipad. With the Free service you are entitled to 2gb of space which isn't bad, but doesn't really cut it long term, you can upgrade to the paid service but there is another way of increasing the amount of space available to you and that is to refer new users to the drop ...

Stop Google translating pages.

Posted on October 22, 2011

I'm working on a Directory at the moment which covers he whole of the UK, coding went fine but once I put the data in I discovered a problem, a problem with Wales. It turns out if a page contains a list of Welsh town names Google want to translate it into English, and while that maybe helpful in some circumstances its not to good when you are trying to find a service in that welsh town. So how do you stop Google offering to translate a ...
